This weeks flower in focus is Vinca Minor, Periwinkle or Myrtle. The beautiful light purple flowers will appear in masses in early spring atop the glossy evergreen foliage. Warning - vinca is considered an invasive species in parts of North America, so do your homework first. But, this is because it has few pests and its dense cover smothers out weeds (sounds like a good thing, right?). It is very easily controlled. Unlike another invasive groundcover, Ivy, it won't climb up trees or fences.
This resilient groundcover works really well under the shade of trees. Because this vinca spreads by runners that reroot in soil, it actually works best to go light on mulching if you want to encourage spreading.
