This weeks flower in focus is Cercis Canadensis, Eastern Redbud. I love these trees. Native to the east half of the US, they are covered in early Spring with tiny purple blossoms. Generally blooming at about the same time as cherries and just before dogwoods. I love seeing the pink flowers popping out on the sides of highways and backroads through the woods.
We recently transplanted a Redbud at my work in memory of a colleague who recently died. An educational plaque is being installed to encourage visitors to consider native plants in their gardens. This beautiful tree will mature to about 25 feet tall and has deep green heart-shaped leaves. Its perfect for small yards.
